25 Before 25 List: 13

Finally! I have accomplished task number 13 on my 25 Before 25 list. Travel out of the State. Last month I traveled to Virginia for Casby’s wedding. This was a very quick trip, but totally worth it! It was the first time that I had seen my friends from college since graduation. Some I saw when I was in DC for the summer of ’09, but the majority I hadn’t seen since we started this new chapter of our lives.

Since graduation we had a lot to catch up on…several have their Master’s. One had just returned from Italy as she and her husband were stationed there. My roommate and I got to catch up and I got to meet her boyfriend (Yay! Sterling and John!). But best of all, we all were together, we all sat around the table like we had so many times in the dining hall. It was like we all just need to each other for that bit of time and then we all left knowing that in a few more years, we will see each other again.

I can’t wait to see where we will be in our lives years from now. I have guesses that a few that are dating know will be married or engaged. Maybe kids! Most of us will have our Master’s Degree by then or even a PhD. We will have advanced in our careers, we will have traveled and seen more of the world, and we will all be able to bring more to our conversations.

After the wedding, which was in Richmond, I traveled down to Virginia Beach/Norfolk, to stay with Catherine. It was great to just sit on the beach and catch up. We both are where we thought we would be by now in our lives. We are working, paying the bills, and enjoying our lives.

So, on my 25 Before 25 list, I can finally cross off number 13!

Long awaited, I am sure

Why hello there. I know y’all probably thought that I had abandoned my blog for good, but rest assured, I haven’t. I have just been busy, and I know I use that excuse all the time, but really, I have been rather busy. So let’s do a little run down of life thus far…

i.      I am a car owner! Probably the most exciting and the scariest that has happened in the last month. It is a sports car, which has taken some getting use to since I am use to driving much larger vehicles, but it is a kick to drive! Then there is the whole payment thing, I am such a budget person and I also happen to work for a broke state, so I am REALLY a budget person; and last week the possibility of not getting paid had me a little on edge. Don’t get me wrong, no need to start a collection fund, I still budget to have fun!

ii.     Summer arrived. I love summer and fall here in the AV. I love the long nights sitting on the patio drinking wine. That is my thing, it is a great way to unwind and let’s face it, a glass of wine is good for the soul. During the summer I tend to piddle around the backyard all the time, I tweak this or that, get in and out of the pool, water the plants and palm trees. It is just those mindless tasks that keep me from going crazy. At least completely crazy.

iii.   My job. Yes, I know I always say I love my job. Even the last two weeks during “the budget”, I have loved my job. Yes, there are those days when I just don’t want to deal with constituents, but you have to suck it up and remember that you were hired to do this job and they trust that you will get it done. When you have those days “in the trenches” a VIP invite comes along to a swanky party and it makes it all worth it.

iv.   Dance. This is a passion I am having a very hard time letting go. When I came home from college I jumped right back into dance. Not just taking classes, but I was also getting to teach what I love and that is ballet. The back to back classes two nights a week is draining, but I have done it since January and I am still alive. However, our recital is in just a few weeks and not only are we putting the final touches on the dances, but I am also designing the program. Yep, I guess I can’t give up graphic design either.

I think that is about it for now. I was hoping that I would have Dismarfumblyhertech redesigned by now, but that isn’t going to happen in the next coming weeks. And I am pretty sure my 25 Before 25 is going to have to undergo some amendments in committee here soon. Wow, I obviously have worked in the legislature for a while since I just used the phrase “amendments in committee”. Hope this updates sufficiently appeases my grand total of maybe 10 readers, but you do read it, so I appreciate it.

Under the desk

As I sit here taking a break from writing up my Legislative Update brief, I have kicked off my shoes and I am listening to the White House Press briefing.

Guys have it lucky, they get to wear comfy shoes to work, all the time. Girls, we have to normally wear shoes that show off our style and fashion sense. Today, although the shoes are comfy wedges, rather than my normal 3 inch heels, I still have them kicked off for a bit.

And as I sit here and listen to Jay Carney brief reporters on why the White House will not be releasing the photos, I have to give the guy major props. Those reporters are picking apart his every word. Although this happens at almost every briefing, it still flabbergasts me every-time I really listen as to how picky they are. I am not going to lie, I would love to be a press secretary. I admire how eloquently Carney has conveyed the White Houses’ views on the not releasing of such graphic photos.

The shoes are still kicked off and hiding under my desk, so I better get back to work and finish with Legislative briefing, maybe I will pretend to be a press secretary and I present it this afternoon.

A little MIA

If my blog were a child, I would be convicted of child neglect. I have absolutely no idea how people have jobs from 9-5, raise kids, keep a household together and go grocery shopping. It is amazing how tired I am at the end of the day and I feel that when I am home all I need to do is sleep. My goodness!

Few major things coming up in my life. My birthday is Sunday. I am getting ready to buy a car, woo! At the end of the month I get to see my best friends at a wedding in Virginia. I am helping plan a political fundraiser with a Rat Pack Night Theme, and I cut my hair, short. Picture will come soon.

I also wanted to drive y’all of to Janet’s new page. It is fabulous and I love it and it has inspired me to work on mine a little bit. Mmmmm, maybe I will get a handle on everything soon and post more regular updates!

It is official

This press release was sent out Friday, this is why blogging as been pretty sporadic and not even close to routine.

Assemblyman Knight Announces Staff Changes

PALMDALE – After two successful years in the Legislature with the same staff that he started with, Assemblyman Steve Knight (R-Antelope Valley) begins his second term of office with a slightly different staff line-up.

In Knight’s Palmdale Office, District Director Larry Grooms chose to retire from Assembly service. Grooms, 65, served for six years as Senior Field Representative and District Director for Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, and continued as District Director throughout Assemblyman Knight’s first two-year term.

Grooms’ retirement caps a more than 40-year career in which he worked as a news reporter and editor, chamber of commerce executive, businessman and founding president and CEO of the Greater Antelope Valley Economic Alliance. Grooms and his wife, Diane, continue to live in Lancaster.

Knight selected Isaac Barcelona, his Senior Field Representative in the Palmdale office to step-up to fill the District Director responsibilities.

Sarah Tyndall, of Lancaster, was then named to fill the Field Representative vacancy. Tyndall previously worked in the Washington, D.C. office of Congressman Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, whose district includes southeastern Kern County and much of the city of Lancaster.

More recently, Tyndall was the manager of the Antelope Valley Republican Campaign Headquarters through the November elections. She is a second generation native of Lancaster and a graduate of Lancaster High School. She is a graduate of Mary Baldwin College in Virginia with a B.A. degree in communications.

Knight said, “Although we greatly miss the vast experience and knowledge Larry Grooms brought to the 36th Assembly District over the past eight years, I am fortunate to have Isaac Barcelona remain with my District team, along with Victor Valley Field Representative Rebecca Tennison.”

Chief of Staff David Orosco will continue to head Assemblyman Knight’s staff from the Capitol Office, with Legislative Aide/Scheduler Alicia French keeping the office running smoothly. Knight’s Legislative Director, Megan Aboudara also departed the office in March to be with her husband who was transferred out of Sacramento.

Knight has brought in Heidi Jensen to fill the Legislative Director position. Jensen was a Legislative Aide with Assemblyman Jim Nielsen, and before that with Assemblywoman Sharon Runner’s office. She is a graduate of Cal Poly with a Bachelors in Agribusiness, and is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Policy Administration at CSU Sacramento. Knight also has a cadre of interns and volunteers in the Capitol and District offices who add enthusiasm and energy.

“I am fortunate to have a well-respected and dedicated team that is focused on serving the constituents of the 36th Assembly District,” Knight continued. “Without an efficient office, we couldn’t provide the level of service our constituents expect and deserve.”

Spring Time

I enjoy having planes in my office, they are not only special to me since my dad worked on both of them, but they are great symbols of the Antelope Valley. However, with spring right around the corner, I need to add some spring touches to my office.

Communication Post-it Style

Since I am out of the office often and occasionally miss it when my boss occasionally comes by to sign things, I have to leave little notes on his desk. Therefore we communicate a lot via the notes I leave on his desk. He will then text me the answer, people when your boss texts you, life is good.
